| Hi
Have been scouring the forums about the inner plugs in the GRiSO 1100, am I correct in thinking its a tank off job and a special thin walled plug spanner is needed ?
My bike has done 17,000 miles and have also read these are long life plugs ie 30,000, will I be ok leaving them till then (strongly suggest they have hever been touched ) but they are 11 years old ?
Also any suggestions where I can source the thin walled plug spanner ?
Thanks in advance

| Yes, it’s a tank off job and if you’re doing that to check the plugs you might as well change them.
I changed mine to NGK CR8EIX (iridium) (were NGK PMR8B (platinum)).
To remove the plugs I used a long 10mm spark plug box spanner, which I filed down to fit.

| 10mm does not look right...
The inner plugs need 16mm hex (5 / 8 ) and the outer 21mm (13/16)....
Try google " thin plug 16mm " gives some thousands of results to me.

| avgpetro, 10mm is the thread size of the spark plug.
I think it's more usual in the UK to refer to thread size first then the spanner size.
Also avoid thin wall 16mm sockets as they are more difficult to file down if it does not fit. Box spanners are easy to file.

| GHTE, according to the maintenance schedule we should be changing the inner plugs every 12500 miles (20,000 km) or 2 years. The outer plugs every 6250 miles (10,000 km) or 1 year.
I assume the inner plug lasts longer because it's platinum and the outer is not.
Also twin spark cylinders don't run well if only one spark plug is working. I've read that it's usually the smaller (inner) plug that would cause a problem, for example it's more likely to foul up.

| Thanks for the heads up Brian. Will be changing the alternator belt soon so will tackle both jobs.
Many Thanks.

| Inner plags should be good for 60,000 km. However, it is foreign in there and sometime water gets in a rusts the metal part of the plug. You really need to get in there from time to time, just to check the condition of them. Clean 'em up and reuse them, go ride again.
Probably every 20,000 km should be enough, but others like Pete, may advise differently.

| Got the tank off, much less daunting than I thought and indeed the inner plugs are rusty on the outside so waiting for my box spanner to arrive so I can do the job and get the rascals out bet they have never been done since the bike was new Pretty tight fit for a box spanner in there [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] | |

| Make sure you blow out all the crap around the plug before removing it or it will fall into the cylinder. You don’t want that.

| I filed the corners down so it was 20.75mm at the widest. Measured using a digital vernier gauge. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Brian

| Very. It’s been a long winter though and the ETS location is notoriously shite on the 2 Valvers. | |

| If you have access to a lathe, get a standard plug socket and turn down the section that interferes with the finning. You can then use you 1/2", 3/8", 1/4" drive to loosen and tighten.
IMPORTANT - BEWARE of the possibility of crossthreading the head side thread. I did it and once done, some extra work will be required to recover.
I am in the position that I can't remove my R/H inner plug - it will be a head off and surgery. It will have to wait on mine as it's due for a top end refresh soon anyway.

| I think its burning a bit of oil and suspect valve seals going to do a compression test tomorrow before and a bit of oil in the bores to ensure its not rings
These are the main plugs really carboned up

| I think mine is burning some oil too, but I don't get the coating you have. That looks way too much if it's oil. I have 110,000 km on mine, how many on yours?
What version of a beetle map mapping do you have? If it's old, there might be an update, maybe not.
