| Here's an old mechanic trick that works good for rusty exhaust bolts/ nuts. After going for a ride, and getting the exhaust hot. Melt a birthday candle on the bolt or nut. The wax will wick into the threads, and make removal easier. | |

| Finally grew a set and lubed the swing arm and drive shaft. I bought the 1100 about a year ago and immediately changed the brake pads and lubed the linkage. More recently the Beetle 1100 map was installed (brilliant outcome by the way). However, the swing arm/CARC disassembly proved too daunting to undertake. After watching the heroic full tear down and rebuild recently from a fellow ghetto intern I was constantly contemplating undertaking the task but none the less saw too many road blocks and avenues for my ham-fisted capabilities to stuff up. Finally the plunge was taken and to my great delight and probably 4 times as long most of you would take the job was done half an hour ago. The swing arm bearings were still modestly greased, however the grease was in a state of change towards a more runny liquid state. The bearing cups were unmarked. The shaft was bone dry but in great nick. Happy and relieved now and somewhat chassend as to the mental hurdle I placed infront of the task | |

| Got my tax refund Wednesday and ordered up some Hepco Becker goodies.
Today I installed the C Bow carriers and rear rack and also the crash bars.
I know I will get scorned LOL but I am also putting highway pegs on the crash bars to give some relief on longer rides. My new hip needs some relief so I don't care what it looks like as long as it works.
I also ordered a Corbin seat, got an email from them that they didn't have a pan in stock so it would be about 4 weeks for me to get my seat. Once that is in I will be ready to do some long distance rides

| I did one of those already. Sent this to Dave Richardson at Moto International as a gag, but he one-upped me by framing it and hanging it on the wall of the showroom when Miguel Galluzzi came to visit trying to get everyone excited about the MGX-21. I'm sure Galluzzi saw it, but he kept his reaction to himself. | ^^^^^ Good point. I'd forgotten that nuance. I do miss the winter, spring, and fall weather down there. Oh, and catfish at Love's on 17 ... tho I've heard it's gone upscale from its untroubling trashiness of the mid-80's. Bill | |

| I desnorkeled my bike today: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Finally I can carry my lock under the saddle. Also managed to remove all the rusty manifold studs. Just waiting for the new ones I ordered at TLM (hopefully arrive this evening). This was the state of the gaskets (top one is from the left cylinder, which had the most rusted studs, basically just the metal part was left): [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]And finally after, oh I don't know, 10 hours or so of hard labor on the studs: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Hopefully tomorrow I can finally ride it again | |

| ...re-mapped the GRiSO thanks to Beetlemaps it was very easy to do and then installed a rear MG rack which took way longer than expected thanks to some misalignment in the rack.
praying for good weather tomorrow to give the new map a try on the road, in the garage she seemed a bit fluffy off the bottom when cold compared to stock but I'm sure its gonna be awesome. :-) |

Bill
Not so much a thread as a classified posting. Despite the bar risers the forward lean on the GRiSO is too much for my sorry back. Rather than try to make it something it isn't, I elected to sell the bike and bought a V7 III instead. I'll certainly miss the big-block power and gorgeous looks but the V7 is a far better match for the way I ride and the new engine is now engaging enough I made the switch.
