Subject: Headlight high beam only?.. Fri Oct 11, 2024 8:51 pm
So i noticed the main headlight bulb wasnt working when the bike was running. Went to replace it but the bulb was fine - i replaced it anyway. Still no result - high or low beam setting. Checked all the x5 fuses and all appear fine.
What next to check? maintenance book mentions a light relay coil?
* so the 'highbeam flasher' button works (light turns on) - but the low / high switch does nothing ???
Cheers

Any suggestions on what to check first? I'm thinking it must be a relay and or the switch block?

If the high beam flasher works it’s not likely to be the relay. Likely switch.

Thanks Pete. After seeing the price I was hoping this wasn't the answer!
Guess I'll try opening it up

Michael has second hand ones I’m sure.

So i opened up the switchblock and gave it a clean out with contact cleaner. No wires seemed to be lose or damaged. On to the relays. So all tested around 120-140 resistance - which according to testing videos 80-200 is correct.
Then i get to the odd sized relay which is a Hela 4RA 940 010-71.. nothing across any of the connectors.
Im assumming this is my issue however these relays seem unavailable. Anyone aware of a replacement brand relay?

That's the Starter Maintenance relay number 3 in diagram (only used when starting engine)....that shouldn't affect headlamp performance and it won't test resistance normally because of the diode.
BTW Not sure that just measuring LV coil resistance is 100% test whether relay is good. Easiest would be to swap another std (cheap) 4 pin make & break relay in the 'Light logic relay slot' OR just swap relay 2 and 6 and see if the bike starts !!

Thanks Paul thats really helpfull. So i took all the relays out. All tested as operating correctly when powered with 12v. As per your advice i swapped 2 and 6 - bike still starts. Issue remains. Can i ask where that diagram is from? its nice and clear to read - the examples i had found are low resolution

Go to the members only section at the bottom of the main page and then GRiSO Ex Libris section and you will find electronic manuals and there is a PDF of the wiring diagram.

The one I posted was from Gregory Benders this old tractor site.....https://www.thisoldtractor.com/mg_manuals/wiring_diagram_griso_1200_8v.pdf
Probably same one on Ghetto TBF

When I wired mine up ( I replaced the original left hand switch block with one that I preferred ) I ran a heavy duty cable from the battery through a circuit breaker to two ordinary 12 volt automotive relays one for main beam one for dip triggered by the left hand switch, thus not running high currents through the switch contacts. The switch block also allows me to run the parkers from it (no relay as the current draw is negligible ) or switch the lights off completely.

@evansnows pretty neat but what happens to your trip computer switch?

Just re-read original post - are you saying neither dipped nor high beam works normally & you only get any headlamp when you press the 'pass' button ?? OR are you saying it's just the high beam that isn't working ?
Only asking as the 12V feed to both high/low beam is the same YELLOW/BLACK wire going into switchgear & coming from the generator directly - so high/low dip switch only works if the engine is running & generator is outputting..... ('pass button' has different YELLOW 12V feed from ignition & relays etc & that will flash even without the engine running.)
If both high/low aren't working then check for 12V on the yellow/black wire to relay 6 in previous post pic

PS All this is based on my LED headlamp but seems only parking light feed is live when ignition is switched on.....both dip & main requires engine running

I felt that the original speedo/revcounter let down the styling of the GRiSO. I bought the GRiSO specifically because I saw her as a classic Italian design with performance and style, knowing that I was going to customize her to enhance the looks. I converted her to a single seat bike with a tail tidy. I retained the original speedo and switch to keep the original electronics but extended the wiring and located them in the tail tidy. I used an Acewell speedo/ revcounter in place of the original. It has a tripmeter etc etc.

Hey Paul - yep neither dipped nor high beam work (when engine running) but the pass button works.
I'll check for 12v tonight - thanks for the steer!

Just to specify. The original switch can be used to trigger 12 volt relays as long as the contacts in the switch are OK. .

So... Solution and confession time! Seems I'm the cause of the problem. When I (attempted) to do the startus interruptus fix I wired up the relay wrong! Bike started but the headlight was bypassed. Anyway reverting to stock and the issue is fixed! Starting issue was also fixed as I got a lithium battery with some serious CCA ..
Oh well shows you should double check your work before chasing new ( non existent) faults
