Hey folks, just dropping the sump and spacer to replace the gaskets. I noticed the small plastic filter on the pickup was pretty gummed up. The gauze packing was mostly gone. Is this normal to replace this at certain intervals?

Hi Pete, It’s on my09/ stelvio. I’m changing the stock gaskets to the upgrade ones you supplied with my roller cam kit. It’s the oil pump in-line filter, a small red plastic unit. Can it be cleaned and reused or should I replace it? Thanks Dave

Oh, hi Dave. Didn't realise it was you.
Do you mean the little 'Sock' type plastic strainer on the coolant pick up? No, that shouldn't need replacement. If it is full of flakey black crap it may be paint from the inside of the timing chest. There was a run of bikes early on that had really shitty paint adherence problems on the inside of the timing chest cover. I've got photos somewhere I'll try and find. If it does look like paint flakes it might be worth pulling the timing chest cover for a looksee. With the one I had I blasted the inside of the cover to remove all the paint. That worked! You just have to be really careful cleaning out the dust afterwards, that's all.
Gimme a few hours and I'll find the pics.

Hi Pete, Thanks for the quick reply. Was there some sort of fabric sock on this plastic part, if so it’s gone. It was a real sticky black goop, didn’t appear to have any solid material in it. I’ve cleaned the filter off, I’ll reuse it then. Dave
