"Getting to know you, getting to know more, about you."
So far my intro to the '17 Black Devil is getting on singingly; I Love This Bike!! As a newbie to the model, here's my progress so far - for what it's worth.. I'm from the 650cc class, so also new to this power and configuration level. Here's my initial post. ** I'm neither endorsing nor promoting the mods below, just listing what I've done.
For the onboard noodle: - P-Lot practice time with uTurns, swerves, emergStops - Local twisties for turn in, full stop, and trail brake feel - Shopping Track Instruction courses for at-speed skill
For GRiSO: - Beetle ECU map for Mistral High Pipe w/o db killer - Mike at MPHCycle - Starter Relay Kit - Dave Moss' GRiSO specific Suspension setup - Street and Track options - Wix 51348 Oil Filter with added external armor ring - Minimal/effective LED running lights front and rear incl number plate brake LED's - Brake Light Flicker module - GTMoto Fold-In Shift and Brake Pedal Tips - Rear bag mount hardware for lashing soft bags - 21 Brothers Rogal XL 50 litre soft U-bag - Puig Windscreen - USB power to handlebar - front hugger extension - rear flap to protect the shock from tireFlungBoogyGrit / sot a full hugger!!
That's it so far. Your thoughts, friends?

Welcome! Pics when you can, please. We like pics.
Armour for the oil filter? Why? Does it stick out below the sump?

Will send more pix asap
Yeah B, the Wix 51348 proturds about ~ 1.5 cm's below flushline. Firstly I got the / was s'posta fit / HiFlo 551, but it too was too too, so reading here I went down to my local O'Reilly's and picked up the Wix, finding it's ubiquitous. Secondly I ordered the clamp which will fit nicely on the filter handle end. C: you'll see in the bike shot my niftless hand fit replacement for the right side front fender brace. Musta been tried as a lift handle by the prev owner - NOT! - pix upped [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

BTW - Beetle, you are a Prince among men! Your map is a beautiful ting. Thank You Sir!! That Mistral Hi-Pipe w/o dbKilt is not at all offensive, more rather manly during exertion. Perhaps when I do a long meandering road trip I'll reinsert the dbQuash and buy that map from ya.
Also, I'll defnit'ly take your advice and get the swing arm dropped for kneedle greasage. Galileo is a meer pup at 3500 miles.

Nice ride BruPo. Seems like you're getting along with the GRiSO pretty well. I was just down in your neighborhood a couple weeks ago, there was a little Guzzi meet up. Nice time.
On my '13 the WIX 51348 doesn't hang down past the sump like that. Must be due to the later sump set up w/o the spacer. I'm wondering if WIX doesn't make a shorty version of the filter ? ?
Fun times ahead for sure

BruPo,
Can you tell us more about the GRiSO specific suspension setup? There's a couple of other members within a pleasant ride distance from Nashville and perhaps a visit on my next trip to my Rock Island property would be in order?

I'd enjoy meeting up with you at some point, surely! Please let me know?
Dave Moss is quite the suspension maven. He's out in LA., has a subscription website as well as a for-free Youtube channel; "Dave Moss Tuning" one can subscribe to. He charges $40 for a personal email consult. He asks 10 questions and for pix of the bike Based on what you send him he comes back with 2 full setup options based on 2 rides Then he asks for your feedback and takes it from there. I'm very satisfied with his service - a really good instructor there. Going forward I may or may not need to subscribe to his website, but it's not too expensive. I give him 5 stars.
Dave's Questions:
Year, make and model of motorcycle Your weight without gear Miles or kms on the odometer Changes from stock for gearing, weight loss and engine power OEM forks or modified – if so how? OEM shock(s) or modified – if so how Last fork oil service Last shock oil service Brand model and sizes of tires Type of use: commute, weekend, aggressive, some track

Please, might of you give me the exact make/model of the OEM filter or the correct HF - so I can cross reference with Wix? Wix has a site we can plug a filter into that'll spit out the Wix equivalent. Methinks the brand is pretty much the go-to here in the states, as O'Reilly carries them.
Will let you guys know.
Is it okay to post external links in these forums? Some sites object..

This from Wix re; their 51348 and a replacement Wix for late model GRiSO;
" 51348 is a 21 micron filter. 57035 is shorter at 32 micron , used on Briggs and Stratton engines and Kawasaki Small engines. - Just an FYI, you said you think you understand why I can’t recommend a replacement WIX filter. The truth is , because we don’t have anything that will meet their specifications and that is what you’re seeing now. - I would not recommend a WIX filter for this application because we do not offer a suitable replacement. Bummer on the later model GRiSO and WIX filter usage
Somebody must make a suitable replacement around here.
Or, just armor up, like you've done with the clamp.

Geez, there's so much misinfo ore; the oil filter for our late model GrisBoyOhBoy!!
Yeah, I'm gonna stay armored up with the Wix - I like O'Reilly for ease of get, and the filter has lots of room to get the cleaning done. Dang right I'll pull over immediately if I get clobbered!
After hunting around various sites for fit confirmation and cross reference, here's what I'm seeing. These are for reference only, and all available on Amazon. This is what I'm seeing. I h'aint personally tried these, so please be advised.
- K&N KN-184 $8.02 - verified on the K&N as an Piaggio fit [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
- Mahle OC 11 $11.05 [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
- Guzzi part# 2a000668. eBay from England for GBP 39 /$50 hahaha MG Cycle has these listed for much less.
* PLEASE DO NOT TAKE MY WORD AS SOOTH FOR THESE FITMENT VERIFICATION'S!
I have not personally tried the above.
If anyone objects, I'm happy to delete this post, please let me know your thoughts?

I’m gathering that Guzzi dropped an oil pan spacer for the last few production years? If so are they available for retrofit? I haven’t seen any.

It's not that simple. While the block didn't change the internal plumbing for the oil filter, OPRV and lubrication circuit are completely different. Unless you are increasing the swept volume of the motor there is no advantage of one design over the other. If you are going bigger then there may be a slight advantage to the later sump design.

Just take a look at the parts diagrams. The differences are clear. The earlier sump spacer was in fact a hangover from the old 2VPC motor as it still contains all the plumbing for the unused thermostat. The later system is neater and frees up volume in the crankcase.

As for the MPH starter kit ... I thought the 2017 was no longer a "startus interuptus" bike? I read somewhere someone with a 2017 GRiSO called them up to order one and it was told not needed?
As for Dave Moss, I'm in the SF Bay area, and many moons ago I had him help set up a Ducati I had ... he was 15 ish minutes away at that time, so was an in person situation. He provided SOOOOO much info in such a short period of time it was like a scene from the Matrix where they load in a program ... except I wasn't as good a Neo in getting it all. And then he wanted $25 for the setup help. I think I gave him $40 or $50. (the Ducati had a ride height adjuster, and fully adjustable front/rear so several tweaks/adjustments/rides were done). So time/money spent with Dave is a good investment!
Also on suspension, how much do you weigh? From my playing around, seemed the fork springs are good for maybe up to 175lb-180lb or so, but the rear shock spring was a bit too light even for my 155lbs. So I'm running stock fork springs and a stiffer shock spring (and some valving changes).
And have the exact same year/color GRiSO as yours!

Glad to hear the Startus Interruptus may’ve bee cured. The kit is pretty cheap and install is 7 mins w/no cutting. Just makes sense. I’m 190 lbs and am not sure if the settings on G were stock. Dave has my shock adjuster lock nut 7 threads from the top. - he ended up giving me two different setups - plus a tweak of the first one, which is ultimately what i’m using now. Good guy.

Sounds as though you've been busy!If you're doing much in the way of colder weather riding/ touring you might consider fitting Oxford heated grips. Very useful to retain 'feel' in your hands. They are less effective if you are wearing super thick gloves.

Greetings fellows!
Couple-few additions to this config've been made;
1. Sorry for the false alert! The armor clamp I pictured above WILL NOT SUFFICE to protect the filter. The pic is that of a much smaller item that is blown up, it only appears to be big and robust. -- I've temporarily gone with a 3 inch rubber flex coupler w/ clamp (read Anal!) till the next oil change when I'll return to a properly fitting Mahle OC 11 or HiFlow 565. -- I'm also seeing that a K&N-184 filter works; looks about right. Any references? [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
2. I added a G2 Throttle Tamer to the mix. It is a nice though subtle change in the initial roll-on of the twister, which I like it just fine. I'm also a pilot, and know a funky lever/system when I hold one..
3. After several 5-6 hour rides and my sore butt, I've gone ahead and ordered a Corbin seat. Hopefully black thread on black vinyl will dim out their obnoxious logo, which they insist on adding.
4. I swapped out the stock headlight for a Truck-Lite 27270c LED unit. They've just upgraded it to be smaller and lighter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1GowNMQvro -- Dude is right; it does stick out ~ cm, so I'll run a ring of red pinstripe tape around it - same color as the MG badge. -- Slight install effort using a duct tape circumference ring and traditional spring steel clips to hold it in place https://www.ebay.com/itm/Motorcycle-Triumph-Norton-BSA-W-Lucas-Style-4-Head-Light-Retaining-Spring-Clips/162969800751 -- Much mo-bettah nitey peeping!!
5. Since GRiSO is such a sweet long distance wanderer, I'll be attending a Traffic Riding Strategies practice school this weekend. My road skills can ALWAYS bear improvement. - A world away from my '84 V65C!
Kudos to Beetle, and you all - for your generous help!!
Thank you, and Cheers!!
