| Hey all. Am replacing the clutch fluid this arvo and despite knowing that this fluid has been there for at least 23000 kms, it still looks quite good - not black or skanky at all. With the opaque tubing I’m using I don’t think I’ll be able to tell when the new fluid has come through. How much do I need to pump through to know that I’ve cleaned out the old stuff? Photo is of the first few pump outs of old fluid. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] | |

| My fluid needs changing every 2 years or only about 5,000 miles for me. It’s visibly dirty. I did both the brakes and clutch and used up about 200 ML/CC of the bottle of fluid. I used Belray brand. | |

| Thanks John, I put a bit over 100mm through, so based on your info I should be right. I was using the squeeze - loosen - tighten - repeat method. With needing both hands to loosen/tighten the bleed screw every time it got a bit tedious. I’ll have to get a vacuum bleed tool before I do the brakes! | |

| Are people keeping brake fluid once opened for years at a time ? Once you open a bottle of brake fluid and the job is complete. Bin it, Petro chemical companies luv making fresh stuff and I buy new everytime I do a brake or clutch bleed.
Or have I misunderstood? | |

| Nah, it's hygroscopic. You're not supposed to store it. ....but I do...and use it after opening.... Ssh? What's that? Is it the world ending? Cats & dogs living together? Alan Jones attending a gay pride festival? Peter Dutton welcoming the boats? Me riding a BMW? No, it isn't. Flame away. Bleat you're portents of disaster. Send your harbingers of doom. I fart in their general direction. | Yes, it's hygroscopic, and darkens as it absorbs water. Use the clear stuff, and pitch it if it starts to darken, even a little. | |

| I generally flush the clutch fluid every year. It turns dark, and the clutch feels noticeably different. I do the other hydraulics at he same time. Yeah, tossing most of an opened bottle of fluid is painful. Try putting some kitchen 'cling-film' UNDER the screw cap to get a better seal. Same idea (under the master reservoir cap) clogs breather and stops leak when when removing a caliper/brake line. I have a cheapo fluid tester from Amazon too.... | |
