| So I went and crashed my orange GRiSO last year. I finally got it roadworthy and... I've now discovered a crack in the frame.
Has anyone had success repairing one of these frames? I am considering all options...

| It's scrap. Don't even think about trying a repair in that area, it's just about the most highly stressed on the bike. Pity you're so far away, I have a perfectly serviceable frame in the yard outside the workshop you could have for nix. It's from a bike that was a statutory write off here which means it can never be re-registered. | |

| Wow, that must have been a hard hit. I take it the forks were bent too. Any compression damage to the lower steering head tube area ? | |

| The bike had: Bent and gouged forks Bent bottom yoke Smashes yoke bearings Smashed front wheel Bent axle Smashed headlight Dented exhaust headers Levers and mirrors broken Left side footpeg and support broken Dented exhaust Broken right side panel. I replaced all of that, with a mix of used and new parts, and got it all roadworthy... the crack in the frame was only noticed after accident assessment and MOT (safety inspection). Really, the bike should have been a total loss and not sold back to me. At the end of the day, I will still have my own bike (I have the engine tuned and fettled) and there is no other make / model of bike I would ever want to own. So although this is annoying, especially after I thought I was nearly done with the rebuild, its only money... ! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] | |

| So the next question is... how easy is it for an amateur mechanic to change the frame? Or am I best giving it to an expert?
Can I remove the frame without taking the swingarm off, like on the older bikes where the engine / trans can remain together?

| Swingarm has to come off, it pivots in the frame. How hard is it to swap out a frame? Well it's a last nut and bolt strip of the chassis. Dropping the motive unit is easy enough but you're also going to be looking at removing and re-fitting the entire loom and everything associated with it. We did it when we stripped Mark's bike for painting when it was undergoing its 1400-ification it took some time but wasn't absurdly arduous.
(We're stuck in Sydney, plane delayed. Grrrrrr!)

| GuzziHero , Its only time you need, and a lot of space to lay everything out. I've done it twice to swap out a Statutory Write Off Frame all because of a small dent in the frame right where your frame cracked. The bonus is, on reassembly everything gets done correctly , IE: bearings cleaned and repacked, wiring harness secured away from rub points, breather hoses sealed where they attach to separator tank etc etc. Take Photos of everything before and during disassembly. It will make the assembly go a lot quicker and less guess work involved. A Bright Blue frame would stand out against that orange paint job | |

| I did consider painting it blue, like the satin blue GRiSO colour...
It may be simpler because I can transfer things straight to the new one. I have the space to park it right alongside and get it done.

| Thank you for the pic of the black framed GRiSO, its good to see how it looks. I think I will leave mine silver to be honest.
I'm a little scared (Im a bodger mechanic at best) but I think I'm going to have a go at it myself. I should have the frame next Saturday, then the work begins!

| Just take your time, study the workshop manual and take pictures when taking the bike apart | |

Yep, black frame for the orange tank, silver frame for the black tank. My $0.02¢.

| I removed the frame of my GRiSO 1200 8V to get it powder coated black, and I am an amateur, never having done anything like that before. It was quite challenging with a lot of bits to keep track of, but also very straightforward and can be done with ordinary tools in a garage by one person, with some help to remove the engine. Just keep track of all removed parts in labeled baggies, and take lots of pics as you go. It’s hard to know how to properly route cables and such without photos to refer to.
The nice thing is you get to inspect and clean every single part of your bike, and it’s very satisfying to get it together and running again. I documented it elsewhere on this forum, I’ll see if I can dig up the thread.
Good luck! | |
