What is the right stuff/technique to clean up the glue residue from the tank decal?

Try WD40 lubricant. Doesn't damage paint, and removes road tar.

What nblades said. WD-40 works like a champ. I wish the stickers were as easy to chip off as the glue is once you get the stickers off. I'm still working on the stupid charcoal canister diagram that is stuck on the right fairing.
