Howdy people. Aside from the workshop manual, not able to find to much specific info on the change of both chain and tensioner.
My bikes done 190k now. And a task on mind, but not yet done, or sourced parts. The chain and the gasket appear fairly easy decisions. Options are refined.
The tensioner on the other hand is debatable.
The workshop manual shows one. And google searches around a number of stores, show a couple of options. The question being, is which is the option, that fits, or best recommended. The little stumpy one appears to be original fitment, and one not recommended, And then there is the long version on a rod with spring, and another similar one with a triangular plate.
When changing the chain, the manual has the engine out, and some securing device to hold the engine static? Does anyone have a procedure if wanting to complete task with engine in frame?
No, you don't want the third one with the plate that fits on the front main bolt. It won't work on your engine.
The one I understand you need, but I haven't fitted one yet, is the first one but as I understand it you need to remove the pin already in the block to insert the one on the tensioner. Once again my understanding is that this can be done with the application of heat with a heat gun or butane torch but this is hearsay.
There is no need for the engine to leave the frame.
I have installed the first type tensioner on my breva 1100. I confirm the need of heat in order to remove the pin from the block and install the tensioner. Not a particularly difficult job, but my engine was on a bench...
Ordered the parts yesterday, a couple week wait for delivery. And then I will probably procrastinate for a little pondering why am I doing this, and hope things go smoothly in the dismantle, and or I don't mess it up
Tonight, completed putting the bike together and 1st start up. there was a whining which was not present prior to task. Interested on thoughts... I will look at the Alternator belt 1st since easy to check. I may have done to tight. Hopefully the case. The new tensioner is a snug fit. Rotating the engine by hand it did not appear to be an issue, but maybe at speed this could cause the whining also? I hope not. Another tear down would suck.
At a Rally I had my V11 Sport next next to another V11 Sport that had the Valtek tensioner & so could compare the difference in sound . My machine had more of a ‘clattering’ sound whereas his had a ‘turbine’ sound.
Minor detail but hope that helps

I could take "turbine" sound to mean more power

Finally the job is complete, there will be a video film following to show how the turbine sound has changed, if it is to be perceived to have changed, but with over 2000km on the clock since the job done. The bike is still going well, I think

Hi Ghost,
I was looking at your thread. Some questions: - After the 190k miles you decided to change the timming chain because you thought it was time or because there were wear symptoms? In case o f the second, which symptoms? - Like you say on your vídeo, the guide looked good...What about the chain? Noticeable wear signs? - Did the new chain fitted correctly in the old sprockets? No need to replace everything like you do with the final transmission chains?
Sorry for so many Thanks

The whine, for sure has reduced. It's no where near as loud as the initial install time.

Hi Ghost, There was a previous mail where I raised a couple (ok...a lot ) of questions. Couldyou please give some feedback on that? Many thanks.

Sorry. I missed the questions. There was no symptoms, just the kms completed being near 200000km. But the tensioner was not too bad. The chain, definitely was only slightly loose fitting. With the new tensioner and chain, the fit was tighter. The tensioner installed may have contributed to a degree to how snug it is now. I would be curious, had I replaced the tensioner with what was originally fitted, if the chain would have had any significant difference is fit, and whine post fitting. But to test this would mean pulling apart again. Even though I could do much faster now. It's not a job you would want to do to often. The sprockets were the original worth no visible issues.

By the way...I have seen some of your videos on Youtube. You are not giving an easy life to that poor GRiSO ...even some off-road included... However, 200k on the clock and still going mighty ....maybe she likes it

Thank you. I love to ride. The GRiSO I think loves to be ridden. And I Bellaire as long as the oil is being pumped around the engine and run for long periods. It must be good for her.
