I'm buying taper roller steering bearings and seals

Locally the Pyramid parts kit came to over NZ$90 including freight
Direct from Pyramid parts $66

Hi!
Did you change from roller bearings to this taper bearings?
Have you tighten it with the 40nm, that is given for the roller bearings?

When I dismantled the steering head the original races were in perfect condition. It made no sense to replace them. I packed them with grease and sent the tapered bearings to Pete as remember. I felt he could use them or give them to someone who'd need them.

I have used tapered bearings on other bikes and when necessary I believe they are a better choice with the larger bearing area.
I just take them down until there's no play but can be freely turned when the steering is turned.
It's easy enough, pretty obvious from rocking the bars to feel that there's no play and that the steering turns freely.

You need to read this - as Pete pointed out 40nm is too high & it just needs to be tightened by 'feel' for snug and not sloppy....
