Subject: Key Chip - Broke Key! Mon Aug 24, 2020 6:31 am
Hey you all,
I broke my key, the little tiny nub off the tip, and the bike won't start. I'm having bad moto karma these days....
So, I've getting key blanks, and my locksmith thinks he can recut the blank to work, but the chip....
My local guzzi shop in brooklyn is very busy and can't seem to work anything in... Is there anyone in NYC, or any type of shop, that could reprogram the cut keyblank chip with my existing key?
Also, do you need the bike to do that? Or can the shop do it without the bike?
Thanks Richard

Do you know what the user code is for your bike?

I contacted the previous owner to see if I can get it.
If I get it then what??

Then you can program the new key yourself.

Sadly I doubt the previous owner has it...

Well you had better hope it's something simple like the last five numerals of the Vin # or you're going to need a new dashboard. How many keys do you have?

Yes. The user code is entered by either the end user or the dealership that sells the bike.
If you only have one key and it's broken you will have to first get the tip out of the bottom of the barrel so another key can be inserted and then get the new key cloned to the old one. In fact it would be best to get at least two cloned so you have a spare.
This doesn't unfortunately solve all your problems. While you will now be able to start the bike if the new key will turn the ignition lock you won't be able to change the code because the 'Code recovery' function requires two keys but the dash will only recognise cloned keys as a single key. That means if you do ever have problems with the immobiliser antenna the bike will be dead in the water as you need the user code to start it.
If the newly cut key won't work the ignition lock because of the jammed piece in the barrel then I'm afraid you'll be up for a new lock set and dashboard.

Yes, it’s user selected. If the code has never been entered, the dash keeps reminding you. The default from the factory is 00000. Owners sometimes use the last 5 digits of the VIN, or sometimes the service code. 12425. Worth a try.

Thanks all. Will try. The tip isn’t stuck in the barrel, it came off elsewhere.
Thank!!

What does the dash say? I remember seeing something about a user code....

If it’s never had a code inserted when you turn the ignition on you’ll get a message saying ‘Don’t forget to insert your user code’ at the bottom of the LCD screen. It will go away after 20 seconds or so.
If no code has ever been entered you should be able to use five zeroes to access the main menu. Once there you can go to the ‘Change the code’ function and choose your own code. Choose something you can’t forget.
You can get the chip cloned. This doesn't help with all the functions of the ecu / immobiliser but as you only have one key it gets you back to where you were with keys.

Find a master locksmith that has the facility to clone keys - most high end auto key cutting shops in the UK will do this but don't know about NYC. They scan the chip in the broken key and then program the new blank with the correct code and cut the key to match the key you have managed to get re-cut. They may reprogramme your own pre-cut key. You can also just cable tie the broken key to the new key. If the antenna picks up the chip in the broken key it will start.
MG UK will supply a key cut to the correct profile from VIN numbers / proof of ownership. The key supplied still needs to be programmed.
True story..... When a young child swallowed the head of his mothers car key preventing the car from Starting. A vehicle recovery service was contacted. The person at the call centre instructed the parent to hold the child in close proximity to the car ignition and attempt to start the vehicle......

AF1 racing in Texas has a key cloning service. It works great, no issues. They have good instructions on how to send your only key to them.

Forgot to mention - when new, your bike is supplied with 2 keys (in the perfect world it should be 3) Key A & Key B. You need a minimum of 2 different keys to allow further keys to be programmed - hence the need for 3 keys! When you get a key cloned you end up with 2 identical keys. You can clone as many keys as you want but the bike will only see the 1 key. This would prevent the bike from programming further keys.
From a riding point, if the clone is successful you don't need to do anything to the ECU. Just use the key and ride as normal.

And without the user code, cloning the key is the only easy way out. Do at least two in case this happens again.

PROGRESS!
I got key blanks cut to the slightly broken key, and it fits and turns on the GRiSO! Oddly enough, with the new key it opens up to "Enter User Code". I enter 00000, and it lets me start the bike!
Trouble is, I can't find "Menu" anywhere. I have a '13, and it only has the one button on the left hand side where the index finger is... and no where can i find "Menu".
So I can't do the thing with the "Set User Code" or "Change Code"
I'm trying to follow these instructions: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Any suggestions you all amazing GRiSO peeps!!!!

Ahhhh... MODE.
So I changed the code...
But now that I try to program the key, I go into "Diagnosis" and I have no idea what my "Service Code" is... I tried my user code and it doesn't work.
How do i find my Service Code???? I see the manual says "only moto guzzi shops have this code"
sheesh...
thanks, r.
