| Desperate and Dateless Kludge No 1.
Yesterday I needed to make a new tool (or set) to safely remove rings from a piston. Being creative, and simply not being able to run down to the local auto store, I had this bright idea.
I have used old ice-cream containers for a number of years to store things in. Recently I was able to obtain several sets of multi-drawer cabinets to keep much of this stuff in. Hence I had some left-over ice-cream containers.
Cut container (I used a lid in this case) into several strips about 1 cm wide ('merican size: 3/8") and about 75-100 mm long (3-4"). I ended up using 5 of these.
Method: Align all the rings so the gap is at the same point. Slide your first two inside the rings at this point, right where the ring gap is - one each side. Immediately slide another two in next to these. Move the second/third ones around about 90 degrees, in opposite directions. You may have sufficient clearance to simply slide the rings off at this point. If not, insert a fifth piece and slide it around so that the rings are spaced away from the piston. Simply pull it all up to remove the rings.
Reverse the process to put new rings on.
This process ensures the rings do not scratch the side of the piston, while removing or replacing.
Stay tuned for more great Kludges, coming to this website near you soon! | |

| Use to use thin feeler gauges to achieve the same thing. Not on a Guzzi tho', never even had the head off one. | |

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]All of the rings can be done at the same time (align the ends to the same sport) or individually. Incidentally I put the ring back on with just my thumbs - now I've chipped a nail and have to go home. Hang on a minute, these days, I'm always at home.
