Epoxy coating gas tank Empty
PostSubject: Epoxy coating gas tank   Epoxy coating gas tank Icon_minitime1Wed Jun 29, 2016 6:26 pm

Being unable to find anything but ethanol gas in Texas, my 2014 tank is swelling some and has ruined the tank decals on the left side of the tank multiple times. Does anyone have any experience caswell (epoxy coating) coating a GRiSO tank? I have read some tanks may be hard to get the epoxy to adhere. Thank you.

Yup, as stated I coated my tank about 2 years ago.
Preemptively - I didn't have a problem but was gun-shy from my Ducati GT1000 experience.

I used the red dyed 'Tigers Blood' (is that a Charlie Sheen thing ??) Caswell epoxy as I have a red 1100. Made it easier to check the coverage of the white interior. No problems, other than covering-up a vent hole (as stated in my post).
Any questions, call Caswell. They've expanded ( no pun!) into this market now, and are very helpful. They've answered every possible question from worried Italian bike owners by now...

Its a good Winter (North) or Summer (here in FL) project when the bike isn't ridden as much...

Guys,
Thank you both! Jeremyb, did you dilute the epoxy mixture of the two parts to get it to flow better? I have seen that in some video's.
Many thanks again.

No I didn't. But it was pretty warm here in FL when I did this.
I've done it twice now: my Ducati GT1000 then the GRiSO.
The Ducati really needed it - I had to air the tank out for 3 months until it shrunk back into shape.
For the Ducati I split the the epoxy in half, and did it twice, which was one method. There really wasn't enough for proper coverage each time .
I did the GRiSO tank in one go, which was easier and better.
Caswell have really good customer support too.

My thoughts are that temperature is another factor why composite tanks are swelling. This problem exists in the Uk but not as much reported as in the US. I have seen an older MS with this problem. Our climate is certainly different to regions of North America. I have a 848evo and a GRiSO. So I am concerned about this issue. I keep my bikes in the shade and garage them with the fuel warning light on if poss. A royal pain in the ass.
