Subject: Scary sounds of GRiSO 850 Sun Jun 07, 2015 10:50 am
Hi all!
I recently bought my first Guzzi: GRiSO 850 2006 and I have already ride it for 1000 km during 1 week (total 9000km in clock). My other bikes have been japanese paraller twins and now I'm trying something new. However all new odd noises make me bit unsure if everything is alright with my used new bike. It would give me peace of mind if somebody here would confirm if these are normal or abnormal sounds. I attach youtube video with this post.
-When engaging clutch there is sizzling noise comign from gearbox/transmission. Googled about this, and this seems to be normal for this type clutch. When disengaged I can only hear motor running. I demonstrate that sound at 00:20 on video.
-Sometimes after slowing down and slighty increasing gas makes bit "clack" noise from CARC when it starts to pull. Maybe this is normal too
-As you may hear from video, there is ticking noise which I believe is coming from left cylinder if motor is running idle or very slow speeds like under 30km/h. I cant hear same ticking coming from right side of bike. I only noticed this today and cant remember if it was there when I got bike. Previuous owner had serviced bike at non-guzzi dealer and they probably only done oil+filter changes to bike. I'm going to get tools to check valve adjustment tomorrow. But besides that, it would be nice to hear your opinion about these sounds!
EDIT: Bike runs smoothly and I really enjoy it. On cold mornings or rainy days I have to give bit gas at start to get it running.

Sounds like a Guzzi to me, but my hearing is a bit suspect...

Clutch noise is perfectly normal, it's theflywheel ringing as the intermediate plate thrashes about. Clunk from rear end is probably the reaction rod loading up. Later bikes have a softer bushing which can be retrofitted to the arm.
Set the valves to 0.1 inlet and 0.15 exhaust and you'll be good to go.

So Tabasco how did you go. I felt the same with my 850 at first. Now I think my Ducati sounds wierd. These are a great little bike. Very flickable, lots of torque. I call her DD. it is especially designated for long weekends when the police have Double Demerit points (DD). She hisses and farts and roars, you think your doing a thousand bastards, look down at the speedo and voila still in the speed limit. Nice One. Enjoy your new ride mate, you will grow to love her.

Thanks! I love it so far already, how it feels and how it looks. However I am still building bond of trust with this bike and that only happens after time + riding. Last weekend GRiSO got me and gf to long ride with tent and got approval from pillion. Next I'm looking forward to test Beetles map for ecu. After fixing valve clearance it already feels better but still seems to be pretty thirsty, 100km/7litres..

This is something I have to investigate more. I don't think that I have issues when changing gears and I tried to pull and push reaction rod to see if it makes clack noise, it didn't. But when throttling after slowing down power is coming back bit awkwardly with that clack sound. I learned already to minimize clacking by slightly engaging clutch during increasing throttle.
I'm lucky that I ended up to buy bike which has enthusiastic and helpful user community. Nice bonus for nice bike -joni
