Well, they put in a new battery and all is functioning again. My fear, as Pete has noted, is that they did not add the acid correctly on the second battery either.
Will take heed on the advice of not keeping it on a charger all the time. Further, I put the charger on the bike when I got home and it took a few hours before it was 80% charged. Seems likely the shop did not charge this one correctly either.
