Looking into a backup/spare transmission for the ‘13 GRiSO. I came across a unit from a ‘14 Norge at a reasonable price. As near as I can tell the two units should interchange. Possibly some minor differences in the individual gear ratios.
So I’m putting the question out there.
Would this be a workable swap.

Some Norge gearboxes have different ratios (taller) for 5th and 6th gear. I think there was a change after a certain serial number. Maybe all 8V Norges?

Yeah, Norges have slightly higher 5th and 6th. That's all. Sport 1200's have slightly lower primary on the input side, those are the only differences. I have Sport gearing on Yellow Bike. Mark has Norge gearing on his 1400.
The gearboxes from the earlier 2V bikes cannot be interchanged with those from 8V bikes despite their identical outward appearance.
Is it worth swapping? In all honesty probably not. Mark and I did it because we could but it's a lot of work for very minor returns.

OK, Mark n Pete
Kinda what I was thinking regarding return on investment.
Good to know about the 4 valve trans too.
Thanks!

Pete installed a GRiSO primary in my Norge box, so that it now has a VERY tall 6th. A true overdrive.

Mark, I recall reading about your mix n match trans build.
I'm not really heading down that path, no 1400 in my future either.
My GRiSO being mostly stock and will probably not change as time moves forward. Just having some parts available is all I was thinking.

The 8V gearbox is pretty much indestructible. Unless something really unusual happens (like it dumps its oil or you forget to fill it up when you service it*), it will last forever.
*you do service it, right? Also you won't forget to add oil when you do.

Personally, I don't like the "fast and long" 1st one too much, because in the case of the throttle play and the bevel gear in the differential plus the play in the drive section, not to mention about the reaction rod (looseness in the bushings), there is a very unpleasant jerking, like riding on the back of a nervous kangaroo. In the case of a "short" shift of 1st gear, he would not have time to acquire these epileptic seizures. But these are my own observations. Pete will certainly have a different and more substantive opinion on this subject and will say that these are problems solely resulting from the disability motorcycle technical

I don't have, nor recall ever having had that issue. I await Pete's treatise on the subject.

Yes, I’m good on the transmission service.
No oil issues.
Reaction rod secure.
On/Off throttle driveline take up is what it is.

Only thing I can really think of that might feel like excessive backlash in the drive train is the symptoms caused by too much slack in the throttle cables. Make sure that they are adjusted so they have the very bare minimum of free play but the idle speed doesn't increase when the bars are moved from lock to lock. Thiss really makes a difference to 'on/off' throttle behaviour.
Making sure the tune is correct is also vital.

Of course.
Saturday is scheduled for the spring tune-up and ritual going over.
