1988 Mille GT ? Empty
PostSubject: 1988 Mille GT ?   1988 Mille GT ? Icon_minitime1Mon Jun 05, 2023 5:51 am

Saw the above on a trailer at swap meet ,
Nice cosmetics , stock exhaust, with the exception of the front brake light switch all electrics working
Charged the battery and it started right up.

PROBLEM: The clutch will not disengage.
Hand lever and cable actuated lever at bell housing both move
Resistance at lever feels normal and it does the usual sound change when pulled

Dead stall if you move the shift lever

It appears the clutch is actuated by a shaft with a helical gear

I understand how c-plates can be stuck after a long lay up but would assume the lever would not move ?

Any input would be much appreciated

Thank you

So how was Gas City? I remembered it last evening, not that I could have gone anyway. Middle grandson had high school graduation this weekend, party on Saturday.

Meet was well attended and the weather was perfect !

Needless to say, I was rather surprised to see an M-G there !

Park bike on street w/no obstructions going forward, start bike on centerstand or blocks, put in gear & roll off -give it the gas before the roll off. RIDE
Most likely will break free. Lever will work normal if plates are stuck together.

Yup, just seized/rusted up from sitting. It's essentially the same clutch as used in the 2V CARC bikes, look at an exploded diagram to see how it works. If you can't bust it free by riding it and going on and off the throttle it's not exactly a ball busting job to yank the gearbox out of a Tonti.

The potential seller suggested adding some type of solvent to bellhousing and letting it soak, pretty sure that would saturate and ruin the friction plates

Flushing the bell housing is an old trick usually used to try and get oil off befouled plates that are slipping rather than freeing up gummed ones.
