Went out to meet my friends in Ft. Davis, Texas. From my house it is a little over 200 miles. Speed limit is 80. I averaged 97. The GRiSO was swinging for the fences. Some nice twisties that was pulled flat! Trying to beat Sundown, didn't want any encounters with Bambi or Javalinas. Made it in one piece bike got great mileage for the speed, about 37 mpg. Came back on a different route was totally awesome!

Wish we could do those speeds here in Oz. If you did, you'd not only land in gaol for quite a few years, but your bike would be crushed and you'd get a huge fine.

I see you found the road to McDonald Observatory. Did you do the whole "Mountain Loop"? We love that area and will be there in Feb. We have reservations at a campground in Alpine for Cowboy Poetry week. Then down to Terlingua for a couple more weeks.
Rt. 118 runs down through Alpine to Big Bend NP. I once ran that stretch on the Blackbird. As I was gassing up in Terlingua, the only Sheriff told me he was going the other way. (We'd been trading cigars that week.) I thanked him, and ran that 80 miles in under 50 minutes. On that speedo, 105 mph is about straight up. The clock is next to it. I held it at 105 for 30 minutes, and only passed one car. Did I mention we love riding in Texas?

We did 118, we rode the scenic loop as well. We also rode down to Balmorhea. Too cold for swimming. Yes wide open riding Rick Pope. I'm afraid California has discovered this! Were crowds both days by the Prada store. River Road and Terilingua some of my favorites. Enjoy your time in February!

Good ride there...love the wide open spaces of West Texas, plenty of places to let the horses run free into triple digits there with no worries (car or moto). Have enjoyed at least a dozen trips out there from Houston over the years, and Big Bend is a wonderfully remote area as well to explore, especially in Winter.

Why's that Pete? Because of covid or just because it's Dallas? LOL.

With the rain hitting the glass this is wonderful. A glance of the better weather to come, great photos especially 6 with the sweeping bends. A welcome tonic thanks

If you look closely at that pic, you can see McDonald Observatory peeking over the mountain. It's a great place to spend a day, taking the tour and viewing the presentations, ending with a star gazing party in the evening. I've done it three times and never tire of it. And the roads get better as you climb.

So, we did indeed get to West Texas, as advertised. We spent three weeks in the arrea near Big Bend NP. Here's evidence: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
