G'day
Can someone recommend a brand for a new rear shock for a 1200 GRiSO.
Mine is stock and bottoms out when Ive got the bride on the back.
And over rough road by myself
Any suggestions would be great.
Thank you
Dan

Lots of options out there. It really depends on how much you're willing to spend and how much adjustability you think you'll need.

Several people here have Matris or Wilburs. Experience says that Matris tend to over-spring their shocks.

If you are regularly carrying a passenger a shock with a preload adjuster rather than just lock-ring adjustment is obviously preferable. It's also a good idea to specify a shock with 20-25mm more eye to eye length to lift the back and steepen the rake angle a bit.

And your bike is a 2008? It has been rollerised I hope?

Thanks Pete
A bit longer shock sounds good. I'm not exactly lightweight.
Can you tell me who supplies the longer ones?
And yes you rollerised it last January.

You can specify when you buy.

A budget type shock like an IKON they can build to just about any spec you like but they have limited adjustability. You can contact them direct or I can order for you.

Wilburs can be got through Suspensions R Us in Melbourne along with other brands but they seem to no longer list Matris.

Shocks are a bit like tyres and oil. Everybody has a favourite! While I really like the adjustability of my Matris it was massively over-sprung when I bought it and I'm now having it seriously modified by Laurie in Fyshwick.

Best idea is to chat to one of the specialists but as I said get a longer shock if possible, Stelvio length rather than GRiSO length.

Whatever you get it will probably need more work to get it perfect, or close to. Certainly Hough the Sachs shock is pretty shitty.

The good news is the Showa forks are really, really good. A decent suspension place should be able to re-valve and spring them for not-a-lot so they work infinitely better than stock.

Dan, I’d back what Pete said. The standard GRiSO shock design has a very short travel. I have a Wilbers on mine, and if I had my time again, I’d try to get a slightly longer shock, like a Stelvio spec. Also, whilst Matris have a reputation for over-springing, Wilbers drift in the opposite direction. If you go Wilbers, add 10% to your quoted riding weight.

Brent, thanks for the info. It's great to hear from other GRiSO owners.
