Hi noted lots of older posts re faults on speedo's associated with sensor. My story is that currently keep having to charge battery as does not hold charge at all. Dash showing healthy charge rate. At same time speedo first started to be inaccurate and slow to pick up then all over place. My questions are might battery failure be linked to speedo fault or just coincidence!
Re speedo fault not washed recently and not ridden in rain. Any suggestions welcome before go out and buy a replacement sensor and battery. Peter

Speedo and Battery are most likely different conditions at the same time. If your battery won't hold a charge, the only solution is to get one that will.
Speedo sensor you could remove and put in a warm (not hot mind, just warm) oven for a few hours, put it back on temporarily to see if it works, and if it does, seal around where the cable goes into the sensor. This in the past has been known to leak and cause trouble. Unfortunately mine was toast, and didn't come back from the dark side - had to buy a new one.

AS Tony says, it's probably water in the sensor but when the bike is turned off it should stop any further drain. There is a plug between the sensor and the speedo, try unplugging it for a day or two see if it cures the battery drain. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

I ca not understand how water in as not washed it since last year and not taken out in rain. It worked for a good 40 miles before going ga ga. I was aware of battery issue over last few months as despite charging to full once charger taken off dropped right down. Plus once came back from long ride turned off then immediately not enough juice to start again. Starts on jump ok!

Water ingress and the damage it causes are not always immediately apparent. Stuff rusts, corrodes and oxidises (depending on the stuff) which if left untreated, will cause damage, sometimes irreversably.
Battery not holding a charge after a long ride points to one thing only - you need a new battery.

The body of the sensor is hard epoxy but the cable is quite soft and it doesn't bond to the epoxy so there's a leakage path all the way into the soldered joints inside, you can see this if you examine the probe, just a tiny gap that wicks any moisture straight in. We used to have the same problem with expensive industrial probes, the secret is to smear some silicone around where the wire comes out, it remains flexible and bonds to the cable and the body.

All makes sense unlike the speedo. Battery on order as starting point then will take sensor off and have a look as advised. Ta.

Cut wire on rear wheel sensor. Can the wire be spliced? I have plenty of slack if it's possible....[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
