Before I went on my trip to the Arctic I replaced the front bearings and seals with a kit from Allballs
8000 km later imagine my surprise when I found one seal shredded
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Wear on just one side of the spacer

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]The bearing has obviously been spinning on it
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]This explained the seal shredding, the wheel dropped down
The first thing I noticed was the large nut clamping everything together was not as tight as I expected, could I possibly have left it too loose or was that due to wear on the slipping parts. I must confess I didn't use a torque wrench just nipped it tight with a 12" crescent.
The independent shop where I go for tires pronounced the bearing shot.
I'm just thankful I found it before my Utah trip next week.
New Axle on the way.
