Front Axle is Toast Empty

Before I went on my trip to the Arctic I replaced the front bearings and seals with a kit from Allballs
8000 km later imagine my surprise when I found one seal shredded
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Wear on just one side of the spacer

Then I had to draw the axle all the way out.

The bearing has obviously been spinning on it
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
This explained the seal shredding, the wheel dropped down
The first thing I noticed was the large nut clamping everything together was not as tight as I expected, could I possibly have left it too loose or was that due to wear on the slipping parts. I must confess I didn't use a torque wrench just nipped it tight with a 12" crescent.

The independent shop where I go for tires pronounced the bearing shot.
I'm just thankful I found it before my Utah trip next week.
New Axle on the way.

Hey Roy
By the looks of it you are able to lift the front wheel with your homemade stand and a floor jake. Am I seeing that right?

Im looking to do the same and this might be the ticket.

Thanks
Norm

The 6 x 2 wooden shop stand makes a very stable support for the rear wheel, takes less than a minute to get the rear in the air without any lifting device then it's just a matter of jacking under the engine and you have both wheels off the ground.

The Luigi hole on my bike has a large washer in each side. I eased them a little to fit the 1/2" pipe but I have seen another one with no washers, you would have to pad the 1/2" pipe so it doesn't make contact with the plastic decorations.
