| A recent post on Wildguzzi led to this: My recently purchased 2013 G12 SE had some weird gunk stuck to the headers so I cleaned it up today: (1) Barkeepers friend and a scotchbrite pad (2) 1000 grit wet and dry, wet with dish soap (3) Meguiars metal polish, cordless sander, foam pad Quick and easy. | I use 0000 grit steel wool with semichrome polish (pink stuff from Germany) or just a rag if it's not too bad. 0000 steel wool & lots of polish was recommended by my buddy Mike Haven at MPH cycles. It doesn't seem like I can go two weeks without having to do it again. I live in Houston where humidity is a fact of life & feels like it attributes to it. | |

| Those clean pipes do look nice, but despite my seemingly endless list of O/C tendencies in all things, including my Guzzis, my "dirty" ones have never bothered me. My GRiSO's still look pretty good, but my EV and Norge's have various discoloration and stains. I am unable to explain why I really don't fret about that, but care deeply about, e.g., a dirty state tag. Bill | |

Bill I agree. I let the pipes discolor and enjoy their visual evolution. To me they are a symbol of a bike well enjoyed. The rest gets the royal treatment as needed.

| I like the gold color, melted black plastic less so.
When I am next in Winchester Va I will show Mr. Hagan the fruits of my labors.

| About once a year I take the time to clean the headers , it easy and just requires some elbow grease .. 1000 grit wet dry paper , penetrating oil on the paper (that's the wet) go in the direction of the pipe with the grain front to back , I use some glass cleaner to remove the mess , and I am done The penetrating oil works to decrease the cut of the grit of the sanding paper , in effect turning the 1000 grit to perhaps a 1200plus also it helps to remove the stains on the pipe .. so usually one go and your done ...in effect wet fine sanding with a lubricant ... the nice gold color returns after a few heat cycles BTW [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] | |
