Subject: Anyone running on 70% street, 30% dirt tires? Wed Dec 23, 2015 8:20 am
I have recently moved to the countryside where the roads can go from paved to dirt. I am wondering if anyone on this forum has experience with such riding conditions and what kind of tires they find suitable?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Hi jOn. When I first got the GRiSO, it had Pirelli Scorpion tyres fitted, these are , I guess, a sort of dual purpose tyre. I also live in the country with a lot of dirt road stretches. I found the scorpions really good in the gravel as they have a wide tread pattern, also ok on the black top, however did not last very long. Since then I have gone for the Michelin Pilot Road, 3's and 4's, running 4's atm and still on the same differing road surfaces, no problems as long as you take care. The GRiSO's a heavy lump of machinery, and the wide bars make all the difference on skatey surfaces, so far the PR4's have kept me upright.

Next summer i'm going to put on some shinko 705's for that reason. Might be a little more dirty than 70/30, but won't leave you fishtailing when the going gets rough

Has anybody found the appropriate size of the Shinko tires for the GRiSO? I can find the front tire size 120/70R17TL, but not exactly the 180/55 17 for the rear tire.
I am looking for a 90-10 or better yet 80-20 road-gravel.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated, not necessarily Shinko.
Thank you

I find the aforementioned Michelin PR3/4/5 to be more than adequate on normal dirt/gravel surface, but they require care when accelerating. If you are looking to go MotoX, then you may want to lighten up your beast a bit before.
At the end of the day, it's your skill as a rider that will make the biggest difference off the hard stuff. Maybe an advanced riding course taking in some "unruly" roads might assist.
Personally I like having fun off the tarmac, and probably ride too hard for the tyres and weight of the bike. But hey, I'm having fun. Wider handlebars also help tremendously. But then again, I am more than a little mad...

Actually I am planning a long trip (some 7000kms) through Labrador and Newfoundland which includes many long stretches of remote and gravel covered roads, hence the question about appropriate tires. Thanks for the suggestions of advance riding course, I could probably teach one.

There you go! You will need some real off-road tyres for that trip, but 7000 km will probably kill them...
