| Going in to town this morning to look at two G12's that are currently for sale in Canberra. First one is on consignment at CMC, has a full service history but it was noted at its last service that the valve clearances were very wide. I need to whip the rocker covers off that one.
The other one is a bike that used to be the last 'Dealer' in the area's demo. It never got sold and when they were given the flick the bike was raffled off to raise money for the Liberal Party! It moved on to a bloke who phoned me up once but I was 'Too far away', (40km-25 miles) so he took it to a "Really good mechanic who downloaded something from the Internet to fix the idling problems." It also has a Termi with no dBk and I believe a rock strainer in it to make it "Go Faster!". I have to say I am going to approach this one with a very big stick and a great deal of caution! Might be able to get it at a bargain price though.

| It does actually, but I wonder if it would be more like Mr. Roper Rolls Into Town. Picture the video camera with a forward view of a run-down dusty facade which says Outback Jerry's last chance Motorcycle Repair and Beer Emporium. The camera goes into reverse while maintaining that forward view though Mr. Roper's silouhetted legs until the full figure of our main character can be seen standing out in front of the shop wielding a large no-longer used and menacing looking exhaust. Kind of like Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares on two wheels though | |

| Pete I saw that advertised a bit last year. I contacted the guy and I really got the feeling something was not right. It had not been registered and he gave me two addresses over a two week period for a viewing-Both at least 2 hours from me. I did not follow up thinking it might be hot or not right. What did you uncover? | |

| OK, the one at CMC has got fucked cams.
When I checked out the paperwork it had been services ast JSG for its ten and twenty thousand services but the last one, (It may of been the first and ten thousand?) was done by Motocicolo and it was noted on the service sheet that all of the valve clearances were very wide. I know that John has never knowingly had a bike with failed tappets through his shop so he probably didn't think about it too hard but I'm surprised something didn't register.
Anyway, as soon as I saw that the alarm bells started ringing so I insisted that before anything else I be allowed to pull a valve cover. They hemmed and hawed a bit but eventually said OK so I went back the next day with a few tools and Guzzidiag. Whipped off the RH rocker cover and the inlet Tappet was below flush with the top of the Cambox and I pronounced the top end fucked. The sales-creature asked me how I could know without taking the top end apart so I tried to explain but it was obvious I was pushing shit uphill with a pointy stick so I just said "When I try and start it it won't hold an idle without goosing the throttle and after a couple of minutes it will idle slow and start chuffing back through the throttle bodies." By this time the Uber-sales creature had arrived and was looking disbelieving and unhappy so I invited him to start it.
Surprise surprise it behaved exactly as I said it would.
The upshot was that after I'd explained that because it had a full service history I could get it a roller kit but they'd have to pay for installation which would cost about $1200 I was told they would "Think about it." So far I've heard nothing. My guess is they'll let one of their mono-browed performing seals loose on it to see if they can get it 'Running better' and then flick pass it to a sucker. It will then turn up at my place and I'll cop a heap of abuse from the new owner........
The other one was the ex demo from the last Canberra dealer. They could never get rid of it so eventually it was raffled off. The new owner on sold it to the bloke Peter just bought it off. He'd actually phoned me after he'd got it but didn't bring it to me because I was 'So far away', (30 Km or so!) so he took it to a local "Very good mechanic" who downloaded something from the Internet to fix its idle problem. (???) Anyway apart from the TB's not being balanced and the TPS sitting at 10.9 degrees it was actually in great nick with only 3,500 km or so on it.
I spent twenty minutes un-fucking it and it ran good so I recommended it to Peter and he picked it up for 12.5K. I took it back out to Bungendore, serviced it properly, re-mapped it and it's just waiting for him to come down from Qld to pick it up. It has a Termi pipe which I've lent him a dB killer for which is a bonus. A nice buy for the money and it hasn't been ridden enough for anything horrid to happen to it. The only 'Risk' is because it doesn't have a service history of the tappets do go tits he'll have to buy a roller kit. Even so it's a much better choice than the Munter at CMC.

| How much for a roller kit on the early engine, fitted? I'm in UK so I'm not asking Pete for a quote, just a rough idea of what I'm in for if my 2009 8v (self serviced so no dealer history) eats its cams. |

| Many thanks. Not cheap but not as bad as I'd feared. |

| Sorry, I missed this.
Depending on market it may also be cheaper to buy a 'B' kit and then just add the parts needed to make up what is needed if your bike requires a 'C' kit.
